The Fantasticast Episode 63 - Fantastic Four #55: When Strikes The Silver Surfer

The Fantasticast Episode 63

It's our shortest ever episode as Steve and Andy see what happens when the Silver Surfer returns to the lives of the Fantastic Four in issue #55. It's a fantastic issue-long punching match between Ben Grimm and Norrin Rad, with at least one incredibly suspicious tactical decision from the ever-lovin' blue-eyed Thing along the way.

Steve Lacey (20 Minute Longbox, Who True Freaks) and Andy Leyland (Heykids Comics, Who True Freaks) are here to guide you through Fantastic Four #54, featuring the first appearances of Prestor John and the Evil Eye, two bastions of the Marvel Universe who definately aren't unknown by most readers of comics, oh no.We also dive into our e-mail bag, swing with Ol' Blue Eyes himself, and imagine the moment of JJ Abrams' birth.

The Fantasticast Episode 60: Marvel Two-In-One #74 - A Christmas Peril!

The Fantasticast Episode 60

Happy Christmas, and welcome to the first of our two end-of-year special episodes of The Fantasticast. Once again, Steve and Andy are throwing the Lee/Kirby issues out of the window (not literally - we've proved over the past two years just how dangerous hardback collections of these comics can be) and are choosing two issues from across the length and breadth of the 53 years of the Fantastic Four.

Andy's selection is up first, and he's chosen 1981's Marvel Two-In-One #74, a Christmas-themed team-up between The Thing and the Puppet-Master. With script by Mark Gruenwald and art by Frank Springer and Chic Stone, this story features a guest-appearance from the best bovine midwife in the world - Bova!

The Fantasticast Episode 59: Fantastic Four #53 - The Way It Began

The Fantasticast Episode 59

No, it's not another origin song - your ears are safe! Instead, it's an origin story, as Stan and Jack tell the tale of the Black Panther, and the tragedy that birthed him. Join Steve Lacey and Andrew Leyland as they take a look at Fantastic Four #53, violent murder, giant red sound elephants, and a chilling comparison with Gotham's greatest hero.

The Fantasticast Episode 58: Fantastic Four #52 -Introducing The Sensational Black Panther

The Fantasticast Episode 58

We've been back in, re-tooled, and fixed the audio, so if you grabbed one of the episodes where Andy and I were about 5 seconds out of synch, jump back and grab one that makes (marginally more) sense when you listen to it!

We're back, re-recorded and 100% kinder on your ears than the original episode would have been. This time around, Steve and Andy get to grips with the introduction of the first black superhero, The Black Panther. Will this be a measured and respectful look at tribal life in another country, or will we get caught up in hideously inappopriate and dated stereotypes? The answer lies within.

We also launch our new Listener Question Of The Month. if you responded to our last question, don't worry, we haven't forgotten about it. We'll be looking at all the feedback collected from this in next week's episode as we review your favourite under-rated Fantastic Four stories.

All this, and the first adventure of the incredible Doctor Spynazi!

The Fantasticast Episode 57: Fantastic Four #51 - This Man, This Monster

The Fantasticast Episode 57

This special episode of The Fantasticast statistically has a high chance of something magical happening if you listen to it on the day of release. For Saturday 23rd November is the anniversary of an assassination, the anniversary of a TV show, and more importantly, the first day of the Thought Bubble Comic Convention, which both Andy and Steve are attending. So, as you listen to this episode, we may very well be facing each other, dressed in our Fantasticast t-shirts, and generally being fantastic. If you see us at the show, do say 'hi'!

If you're not in Leeds on this day, then enjoy our coverage of Fantastic Four #51, the classic one-shot story This Man, This Monster. We had a lot of fun putting this episode together, and our little post-credits tribute to Doctor Who has to be heard to be believed.

Steve has one week to go before his first ever 5k run, the Mousdashe, on behalf of the Prostate Cancer Research Centre and Rething Mental Illness. If you'd like to support these charities through his endeavours, then his fundraising page is here: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/StephenLacey

The Fantasticast Episode 56: Fantastic Four #50 - The Startling Saga Of The Silver Surfer

The Fantasticast Episode 56

Guided by The Watcher, The Human Torch ventures into sub-space to seek the only weapon useable against Galactus. Meanwhile, cowed by The Punisher, The Thing, Mr Fantastic and The Invisible Girl find themselves powerless against The Destroyer Of Worlds. Only the power of The Silver Surfer can halt Galactus's plans to devour the Earth.

Steve and Andy, even more unable to affect the seemingly unstoppable sequence of events, have to satisfy themselves with recording a new episode of The Fantasticast, covering the 50th issue of The Fantastic Four. Do come and join us!

Steve's currently in training for his first ever 5k run, taking place at the end of November. it's called the Mousdashe, it's part of Movember (you should see his Trejo-esque fuzz), and it's supporting both the Prostate Cancer Research Centre and Rethink Mental Illness. The Fantasticast Episode 55.5: We've Made A Huge Mistake...

What lovely updated art from Michael Georgiou!

Yes, it's another fill-in show, and we can promise you no singing this time around. Except that we can't really, there will be singing. But what we can give you is a selection of the best openings and outtakes from the first 10 episodes of The Fantasticast for your enjoyment.

Steve and Andy will return next week with their coverage of Fantastic Four #50 and the conclusion of the Galactus Trilogy. Until then, why not throw some money at Steve as he prepares to complete his first 5k run in aid of Movember? Donate here: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/StephenLacey

The Fantasticast Episode 55: Fantastic Four #49 - If This Be Doomsday

The Fantasticast Episode 55

The Jack Kirby Collector has this to say about page 2 of Fantastic Four #49: "[it's] the exact point when the 1960s super-hero comics peaked."

The Encyclopaedia Galactica also covers this subject, going into greater detail about the impact of a second splash-page at the start of the comic, conveying the majesty and scale of the two characters portrayed.

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy simply mentions that as the Earth is not about to be destroyed by a Vogon Constructor Fleet, then the events on this page must therefore be fictional, and can safely be disregarded. Unlike the Vogon Constructor Fleet.

Steve and Andy, however, find more to talk about in this comic than just one splash page, no matter how phenomenal that page is. There's the depiction of The Watcher, the arrival of the (original) Punisher, and the first meeting of the Silver Surfer and Alicia Masters. It's pretty good!

The Fantasticast Episode 54: Fantastic Four #48 - The Coming Of Galactus

the-fantasticast-episode-54-300

MY JOURNEY HAS ENDED

THIS PLANET SHALL SUSTAIN ME UNTIL IT HAS BEEN DRAINED OF ALL ELEMENTAL LIFE

SO SPEAKS... GALACTUS!

With these words, so ends the first part of a three-part story regarded by many as the peak of Marvel's 1960s comics.

Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland tackle Fantastic Four #48, wrapping up the opening story in the saga of the Inhumans, and introducing the Silver Surfer and Galactus to the Marvel Universe.

sue's inappropriate haircut

When would be the least-appropriate time to get a haircut? 10 minutes before you're expected to walk up the aisle? Halfway through the Mens 100m Olympic final? Or on board a plane zooming halfway around the world, chasing a mysterious super-powered being who has kidnapped another mysterious super-powered being and who may very well turn against mankind?

Well, the Fantasticast is here to reveal this answer. Steve and Andy get to grips with Fantastic Four #47, as the saga of the Inhumans steps up yet another level. The Royal Family is back together, we go to Attilan for the first time, and we meet Maximus - but is he Magnificent or Mad?

The Fantasticast Episode 52: Fantastic Four #46 - Those Who Would Destroy Us

The Fantasticast Episode 52

Who Seeks The Seeker?

Hello and welcome to the 52nd episode of The Fantasticast. There are now enough episodes for you to listen to one a week for an entire year. But it's not just about obvious and underwhelming numerical facts!

This time around, Andy's got a cold, and Steve's taken advantage of that to create the most revolting episode introduction yet. We're covering Fantastic Four #46 (in Andy's case, in a liberal dose of snot), as the Inhuman saga heats up and we get to see just how much of a badass Black Bolt is. We also find out which international celebrity spoiled the end of Breaking Bad on twitter during the record (don't worry, that spoiler is not repeated).

But most importantly of all, we launch our first listener question. We want you, lovely listener, to tell us what Fantastic Four stories you feel are underrated. When we (rightly) venerate the runs of Lee/Kirby, Byrne, Waid/Wieringo, and Hickman, which runs, stories, issue or miniseries do you feel don't get the attention that they deserve? E-mail us, tweet us, facebook us, comment us and let us know!

The Fantasticast Episode 51: Fantastic Four #45 - Among Us Hide The Inhumans

The Fantasticast Episode 51

Agents of F.O.U.R.

Yes, the episode title is a blatant piece of attention-grabbing, what with the release of the TV show.

This week, we welcome back Charlie Niemeyer to the show. Host of Superman In The Bronze Age and Charlie's Geekcast, and co-host of Starman Observatory, Charlie is just the guy we wanted to have sit around whilst Steve summarises this week's issue!

And what an issue. Having been teased with Gorgon last week, we now get a full bevy of Inhumans this week. Crystal. Lockjaw. Karnak. Triton. Black Bolt. Kirby's opened up his imagination and letting everything spill out.

Along the way, we find time to do the Ninja Rap, have a gimp on the show, and sing the Dogtanian theme.

The Fantasticast Episode 50: Fantastic Four #44 - The Gentleman's Name Is Gorgon!

The Fantasticast Episode 50

The Gentleman's Name Is Niemeyer

Hello and welcome to the landmark milestone never-to-be-reached-again-unless-we-restart-the-numbering fiftieth episode of The Fantasticast! In case you hadn't guessed from the title, this week Steve and Andy are joined by veteran podcaster Charlie Niemeyer. Known by some as the host of Charlie's Geekcast, by others as the host of Superman In The Bronze Age, soon-to-be-known by some as one of the co-hosts on Starman Observatory, Charlie is best known for his four-second appearance in our trailer as Doctor Doom.

This time around, we get to be ridiculously relevant and contemporary. Literally as I write this, Marvel are hosting a liveblog revealing the scope of the upcoming Inhumanity event. Two days, ago, Marvel released a trade paperback collecting this issue and several others, chronicling the origins of The Inhumans. And it all begins here: Issue 44 of The Fantastic Four - The Gentlemen's Name Is Gorgon. And as if this wasn't enough, the title welcomes its new regular inker, the legendary Joe Sinnott.

Along the way, we discuss Jack Kirby's influence on Bruce Timm, the best Golden Age penciller, and realise that just one corpse of Jon M Wilson in our basement isn't really enough...

Lo, there shall be a cover image. Redesigned by Sam Savage (more on him later) to better show off both the glorious Kirby cover artwork and the glorious Georgiou artwork.

Lo, there shall be a guest host. Sam Savage (see? I told you there'd be more of him) joins us this week to try his hand at speaking out loud. He does a pretty good job of it!

Lo, there shall be a coverage of Fantastic Four 48, featuring the wrap-up of the Frightful Four trilogy quadrilogy pentalogy wait, just how long has this story been going on for anyway?

Lo, there shall be an announcement about the future of the show that is completely genuine unlike the one where we fooled a couple of people into thinking we had quit the show.

Lo, there shall be an overly-dramatic and tedious joke throughout the shownotes for this episode.

The Fantasticast Episode 47

Because once just isn't enough

(Oops, I can see I gave Sam the wrong X-Men cover to use for the image. That'll teach me to arrange podcast stuff when drunk. Aside: It won't.)

Hello and welcome to the 47th episode of The Fantasticast. There's a strong sense of deja vu in the air today, as thanks to a recording failure, Steve and Andy are doing it all over again. So, for the second time, we're covering Fantastic Four #43, wherein an evil Ben Grimm does his best to help the Frightful Four defeat the Fantastic Four. We're also checking in with X-Men #13, wherein a slightly-brainwashed Johnny Storm does his best to help the X-Men defeat the Juggernaut.

Along the way, we discuss Omnibuses, the departure of Matt Fraction, the awesomeness of Karl Kesel, the un-awesomeness of the original X-Men logo, and we have special guest-appearances from every guest-host we've had on the show to date.

There's also some singing. Sorry about that...

The Fantasticast Episode 46: Fantastic Four #41 - The Brutal Betrayal Of Ben Grimm

The Fantasticast Episode 46

change my dear, and not a moment too soon

After 19 months and 46 episodes, Steve and Andy have decided to call it a day. Join us at the start of this episode as we broadcast live to the world to exclusively announce who the next hosts of the Fantasticast are. The betting has been hot, Rich Johnston keeps naming other potential hosts other than the ones who will be announced, and shortly, the secret will be revealed. Here's hoping all of the anticipation isn't in aid of a 30 second opening gag that ultimately changes nothing...

Hello and welcome to the 46th episode of the show. For real. Steve and Andy are trying a new way of recording, hoping to make Steve sound like a normal human being, and we hope you'll notice an improvement in the sound quality of the show.

It's a shorter episode than normal, as there's only one comic up for coverage this time around. So, we take a bit of time to trawl through the e-mails and feedback we've been receiving recently. Then it's into Fantastic Four #41 as the Frightful Four make their return with devastating consequences for the team.

The Fantasticast Episode 44: Fantastic Four #39 & Strange Tales #133

The Fantasticast Episode 44

The Other Other Murdock Papers Podcast Podcast

Hello and welcome to the 44th episode of the show. This week, Andy and Steve are joined by Christine Hanefalk, writer of theThe Other Murdock Papers blog and host of The Other Murdock Paper podcast. Why do we have such an incredibly awesome co-host who has dedicated large amounts of time and creativity to a blind lawyer who is definitely not a super-hero oh no not at all?

Well, Fantastic Four #39 is the first of a two-part epic featuring an attack from Doctor Doom, a powerless set of heroes, and a special guest-appearance from Daredevil! As well as this, Strange Tales #133 sees the return of the Puppet Master in a tale that... well... it's an issue of Strange Tales. 'nuff said.

All this, and singing, mispronunciation, impressions of Jackie Mason, some thoroughly filthy suggestions regarding what Reed can do with his technology, and a special appearance of Stan's ability to completely forget the names of his characters.

Check out this special post from The Other Murdock Papers here, and why not drop Christine a follow on twitter?
