The Bad Guy Is Called Hugh

Hello, and welcome to episode 342 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, a packed episode sees us don matching hats to dominate the entire- wait, these aren't hats! They're multiversal incarnations of the Serpent Crown! And only The Thing and the Scarlet Witch can save us from a <checks notes> oil CEO called Hugh. It's the final part of the Serpent Crown Affair, and we're here to examine just what happens when a deranged businessman tries to grab power in Washington.

Oh, right...

Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, Ron Wilson, Gene Day, Frank Martin Jr, John Costanza, Jim Salicrup, Joe Sinnott, and Jim Shooter present Marvel Two-in-One #66 - A Congress of Crowns. And, if that wasn't enough for you, we also look at what happens when Reed and Sue go shopping in Defenders #86, what happens if Doctor Doom had chosen a path of heroism in What If? #22, and we throw ourselves into Shogun Warriors #19 to see if the addition of the Fantastic Four can save this little-loved title. Plus, we get a bit tired and honest while answering one of your e-mails...

Pregnancy Blind Spot

Hello, and welcome to episode 338 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we return to both the Marvel multiverse and Earth 772 as we take a look at how Reed Richards might fare following Sue Storm's decision to stay with Namor the Sub-Mariner. Rejecting Spider-Man, alienating Ben, faking evidence to draw the world into war, and attempted genocide - all perfectly reasonable responses that don't warrant further analysis.

And joining us for that further analysis is podcaster Jon M. Wilson. Host of Make Ours Marvel, All The Pouches: An Image Comics Podcast, former host of more shows than we can mention, and the podcast who gave Steve his podcasting break, Jon joins us to complete his Fantasticast guest-hosting hat trick, a feat that has taken eight years to complete. Well, good thing come to those who wait... Follow him on twitter, where he is @jonreadscomics!

Bill Mantlo, Gene Colan, Bob Wiacek, Carl Gafford, Tom Orzechowski, Denny O'Neil, Mark Gruenwald, and Jim Shooter present What If? #21 - What If... Sub-Mariner Had Married the Invisible Girl?, a comic full of a diminishing team, misplaced attempts to garner the sympathy of the reader, an inability to distinguish between Attuma and Krang (although that may just be Steve) and, sadly, no bollockfish. But if you're after toxic masculinity and an irrelevant Sue Storm, then this comic is the one for you!

Laptop Or Cigar Box?

Hello, and welcome to episode 329 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

How many issues of downtime do you need following one of the greatest stories of the late-1970s? We're glad the answer is 'more than one', as it allows to us to enjoy an evening in the company of Ben Grimm, Alicia Masters, The Thing's purple-and-green hat, and... waitaminnit! That's not a hat! That's The Impossible Man!

Ralph Macchio, Mark Gruenwald, George Perez, Gene Day, Roger Slifer, John Costanza, Roger Stern, Bob Budiansky, and Joe Rubinstein present (and, for some of them, star in) Marvel Two-in-One #60, featuring the return of The Impossible Man, three unlikely villains, and an poorly-timed spot of life drawing. In addition, we revisit Spider-Man's first encounter with the Fantastic Four as to take a peak at What If? #19, and prepare for future episodes in the Microverse with The Micronauts #14.

Oh So Tropey

Hello, and welcome to episode 298 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we've got a triple-shot of late-70s Marvel goodness for you. We start with Marvel Two-in-One #46, in which some jealousy over the Bill Bixby TV series leads The Thing to Hollywood, where a throwdown with the Hulk disrupts an attempted kidnapping of Karen Page. Allan Kupperberg, Chic Stone, Gaspar Saladino, Roger Stern, and Jim Shooter are along for the ride.

Then it's off to Earth-7812, which attempts to answer the question... What If Rick Jones Had Become The Hulk. What If? 312 sees Reed Richards trying to help Bruce Banner separate the teen from the monster. And finally, we swing by an introspective Spider-Man in Spectacular Spider-Man #25. Oh, and we also discover what the word is.

Real-Life Clobberin' Time!

Hello, and welcome to episode 292 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

Hey there, Kirby fans. This week, we're covering the final major contribution of Jack Kirby to the world of the Fantastic Four. Working off an idea from Roy Thomas, Jack imagines a world where Stan Lee, Sol Brodsky, Flo Steinberg, and The King himself become imbued with the powers of the Fantastic Four, and have to track down the mysterious 'S Men' while putting out some of the most notable comics of the 1960s. With hilarious consequences.

Jack Kirby, Mike Royer, Carl Gafford, Bill Wray, and Roy Thomas present What If? #11, an issue that breaks all the rules of What If?, has a ton of fun along the way, includes some astonishing late-period KirbyTech, and casually reveals that Atlantis exists in the 'real' world. Join us, as we bid a final farewell to one of the creators of the Fantastic Four.

Don't forget to join Steve at 3pm on Saturday 28th July at London Film & Comic Con as he interviews Dan Slott and Sara Pichelli about the upcoming Fantastic Four relaunch!

Sorcery Wankers

Hello, and welcome to episode 269 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we're off to Earth-7712 (well, it's better than the UK as featured in recent issues of Two-in-One!) to discover a different incarnation of the Fantastic Four. A twist of fate grants the team a different set of super-powers to the ones we are familiar with, and we're here to examine the adventures of Big Brain, Ultra Woman, Mandroid, and Dragonfly, as they encounter Doctor Doom for the first time.

Roy Thomas, Jim Craig, Rick Hoberg, and Sam Grainger present What If? #6. Discover the first time that the team's personality traits are used as a reason for their specific powers, and read along with never-published comics from an alternate universe, before Immortus destroy them all. Because what's the point in having a podcast if you can't go all multiversal when you want to?

The Fantasticast Episode 251

The Logistics of SHIELD Pizza

Hello, and welcome to episode 251 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, we're tackling two mighty Marvel tales. In the first, Marvel Two-in-One #26, a pizza date with Nick Fury turns into a fight against a mesmeric master and a future Thunderbolt for Ben Grimm. Mentallo and The Fixer are back, the world will never be the same again, and neither will a certain refugee from Earth-7484.

Then we're off into Earth-774 to revisit the history of The Incredible Hulk in What If? #2 - What If The Hulk Had The Brain Of Bruce Banner? This questions leads to the permanent cure of Ben Grimm, the abandonment of mutant rights, and the non-destruction of Earth, proving that the series just doesn't know its own tropes.

The Fantasticast Episode 248

Return Of The Bollocksfish

Hello, and welcome to episode 248 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

Today, we peer through the windows into a strange parallel world of what might have been. For, none save The Fantasticasters (and their guest) can truly know what could have happened, but for the invisible workings of an incomprehensible fate. Today, we answer the question, What If Spider-Man Had Joined The Fantastic Four, as we read What If? #1.

We're joined by our episode image designer Sam Savage to look at the first of many Marvel titles devoted to the alternate worlds where history took a different turn. Roy Thomas, Jim Craig, and Pablo Marcos come together to retell and revise Fantastic Four and Marvel history. Will The Watcher's narration irritate us all? Will the Earth explode? Will we spend too long recapping fight scenes that have little-to-no bearing on the plot? Find out, as we enter Earth-772!

We also take some time at the start of the episode to pay tribute to Len Wein, who sadly and unexpectedly passed away earlier this week.
